PhD on Garment Durability
As a continuation of my previous work on garment durability, I am pursuing a 3-year PhD at l'ENSAM Paris on the topic “Leveraging a durability index to measure and evaluate a product’s durability throughout its different lifetimes”. I have several mentors to guide me throughout the process: Lamouri Samir (l'ENSAM), Andrée-Anne Lemieux (Institut Français de la Mode) and Kirsi Laitala (OsloMet). Sophie Bonnier (Kering) will also be giving her much-appreciated perspectives as an external advisor and direct link to the fashion industry.
I will be conducting my research in Sumba, an Indonesian island that is home to the world-renowned ikat weaving, making it an extremely interesting place to understand how craftsmanship can influence the lifespan of textiles and garments.
"The two dimensions of garment durability are: intrinsic and extrinsic. By integrating these into a just circular transition, we can ensure different life cycles through practices of care, mending and repair. This makes it a constant interaction between the garment, its changing environment(s) and the user(s)."
